The novel takes place against the backdrop of historical events in 16th-century France, including the eve of the St. Bartholomew’s Night (July 1572). At the center of the story are the life and intrigues of the high society, the intertwining of love, politics, and adventure. “The Charming Jeweler” and “The King of Navarre’s Mistress” are brought together under the name of Marguerite de Valois, Queen of France and Navarre. Her contemporaries called her Minerva, patroness of the sciences and the arts. Her descendants will call her one of the first feminists. Competing with men in both the sciences and the arts, she also defended women’s right to freedom of choice in love. On the pages of this book, the reader will meet not only the Princess of Valois, but also the young Henry of Navarre—the future king of France—along with their friends and enemies, rivals and lovers.
