– Gone?
– Gone!
– Barely made it!
Five village men set out to go fishing—as a group of their own, without wives and children. It seemed like the last time: after this, it wouldn’t be so easy to get everyone together again. And at first everything went just as it should: the sun was baking, the fish were biting, and the raft held its course confidently.
Until they stumbled upon something in the water.
– The boat, – Mikhaylovsky said very seriously. – Strange.
All five of them stopped what they were doing and stared into the reeds.
– Sanechka, turn the rudder, – Zhenya took hold of the pole.
The raft drifted toward the shore.
In the thickets there really was a boat. Empty. Unmoored.
On the bottom— a backpack and a couple of men’s sneakers. There were no living people nearby.
