Lieutenant Rzhevsky and the Vampire Lady

In the summer of 1826, a pale gentleman who looks like a vampire comes to Lieutenant Rzhevsky, who is bored on the estate. This “vampire” really wants to buy the yard girl Polusha—and is quite offended when he hears “no.” Soon after, Polusha disappears.

Time to start searching! And it’s very convenient that at Rzhevsky’s neighbors’ place his old acquaintance, a young lady Tasенька, is visiting—she is glad to help uncover new secrets. Tasenka doesn’t believe in vampires and is ready to expose myths even after Rzhevsky meets the wife of the pale gentleman. The woman’s skin is as pale as her husband’s, and her little teeth are very sharp. However, despite the teeth, this lady is pleasant in every way: she enchants with her beauty, like a witch—and under these circumstances it’s very hard for Rzhevsky to conduct an investigation.
