Description
Nina Semenovna Katerli (Efros) was born on June 30, 1934, in Leningrad, into a family of journalists. In 1958 she graduated from the Leningrad Technological Institute named after the Lensoviet, and for about fifteen years worked as an engineer, a chemical technologist. She began writing prose in the late 1960s, and her first publication appeared in 1973: the story “Welcome” was printed in the journal “Koster.” In 1981 her first collection of short stories, “The Window,” was published; then came the books “Colored Postcards,” “Kursal,” and “Sennaya Square.” Many of Katerli’s works could be conditionally called “fantastic-everyday” prose: in them, the fantastic (most often without any signs of “scientific” character) and realistic layers are woven together in an unusual way. Many of her works have been translated abroad—to the USA, Germany, France, Japan, China, Finland, and other countries. In addition to her literary activity, a large part of Nina Katerli’s life is devoted to human-rights work; she constantly speaks in the press with sharp articles on topical political topics.
