There’s something light and playful in the very word “Barcelona,” and there’s also something inspiring in it. Three weeks of language courses in the capital of Spanish Catalonia promise Masha Molochnikova a lot—but first and foremost, a new, unique experience. “First Job. Spain” is an exciting summer novel in which the heroine finds herself in exceptionally unusual circumstances.
Masha will have Spanish classes, very different classmates, and teachers who don’t resemble her usual ones at all. The fifteen-year-old heroine is ready for everything: she reviewed the grammar, in her backpack there’s a book about Gaudí, and her head is full of plans. But how will an unfamiliar city meet her? What kind of landlady will the apartment have, where she’ll have to live? Will the girl manage to feel grown-up and independent?
How long the previous year dragged on! For ten whole months Masha dreamed of Barcelona, and now—her dream came true. Readers will learn from the first book of the trilogy what it cost her to go there: being a tutor to the restless Dana is another kind of pleasure! Barcelona has also prepared plenty of surprises—and… tests—for Masha. Self-doubt, fear of getting lost, heavy immersion in the language environment, the headstrong companion Marina, amazing Spanish acquaintances, proposals that are simply astonishing—not a trip, but a test of endurance!
The second part of the trilogy “First Job,” on the one hand, is independent from the previous book, and on the other hand reveals the character of the main heroine in a new way. The author, Yulia Kuznetsova (winner of the “Cherished Dream,” “Kniguru,” and the International V. P. Krapivin Children’s Prize), as always, sets the heroes difficult tasks and requires them to solve them by their own efforts. And it turns out—maravilloso, as they say in Spain—excellent!
