Young designer Alexander Kharitonov meets a sweet girl, Olya, and over time makes her a proposal. Olga agrees, but asks her young man to take their blessing for their marriage from her only relative—her cousin aunt—who lives alone in a house that for many years has belonged to their family. Alexander agrees, but how surprised he is when instead of a typical old village house, they arrive at a huge estate spread out in the middle of a dense forest—and the fiancée’s aunt is far more suited to be her aunt than her aunt-in-law.
Inspired by the beauty and mysterious atmosphere of the place, Alexander begins to paint a portrait of the estate’s owner—and then frightening events start happening around him. Time and again, Sasha sees in his sleep people whom he is sure once died here, and visitors from beyond the grave clearly don’t mean him any good. He tries to find a rational explanation for his recurring nightmares, but he loses hope when the dreams gradually start becoming real.
