Late 18th century, Russian Empire. Young uhlan Stanislav Bulat has already been living in Moscow for two years and working for the Secret Expedition. He is summoned to Saint Petersburg to take part in an inquiry into the case of a prisoner held in the Peter and Paul Fortress—whose name is kept secret.
