The door to my bedroom bursts open with a crash. My father appears in the doorway—angry, as he’s been lately.
“Get ready, Kira. The wedding is in two weeks,” he says, dry as dust.
“I’ve already told you I won’t marry Tagayev.”
“You’re not marrying him, Kira. You’re marrying the father of the child.”
I swallow hard. Something inside me seems to snap and then immediately shoots upward. In a single second it happens. With nerves, I barely manage to speak and remember my words.
“Who is it, Dad?”
I need to ask. I need to hear. I need to be sure my father isn’t trying to pull out the name of my child’s father—someone I keep secret.
“For Kirill Bagrov, of course. Or have you forgotten who you’re pregnant by?”
