Kostya Mishutin, a young gamekeeper from a hunting estate lost deep in the remote Kareliан forests, came face to face in an impenetrable thicket with “reconstructors” dressed in prewar RKКА uniforms. For a joke, he decided to play along and, when they barked the ominous order “Stop, who’s going?!” he replied, “A deserter from Finland! I don’t want to fight the Soviet Union!”
Only after a few hours did Kostya realize that the thousands of armed people in authentic uniforms he’d seen were in no way “playing at war.” Around them, a real war was indeed underway—later called the “Winter War.” And the abilities of a gamekeeper who can “listen to the forest” would prove invaluable in hunting enemy snipers, nicknamed “cuckoos,” who were terrorizing Red Army fighters.
