Not even a year at the Academy—young Zachery Nickers, together with his friends (all students of the Fire faculty), sets off for field practice. After the Emperor’s death, the regent of the throne—Counselor Mittis—issued an order: to form an Il of Craftsmen’s Department of the patrol and send them to all towns and villages.
And so Zak, Alice, Chez, Naive, Neville, and their supervisor Kayten head to the border town of Craidoll—a dreadful backwater. The only advantage is that it is the homeland of the Vickers brothers, who at first help the kids settle into the new place.
Everything begins with the fact that the Fire patrol is housed in the famous Cursed House, where they discover a mysterious fountain—and after that, events roll on like a snowball from the top of a mountain.
