Despite the title, and the fact that the main character of the story (and the narrator) is a dragon, the work belongs to pure science fiction with not the slightest hint of fantasy.
The plot premise brings to mind “Nine Princes in Amber” by R. Zelazny (and not only!): the main hero, having lost his memory, tries to remember who he is and what he is doing on a medieval planet where dragons, as a biological species, are completely absent. I should note that within the story the reader (just like the dragon) will receive no meaningful answers to any of these questions—only hints. In the second novella of the cycle, the author got the idea of “explaining everything”—and completely in vain. The atmosphere of a mystery only slightly unfolding was one of the strengths of “The Word…”
