Description
In the far distant future, space travel remains a pastime not for the cheap—available only to the chosen. For example, Marvin Flynn, an ordinary student from the American backwoods. He has long dreamed of going into space, but in his pockets the wind whistles, and leaving Earth is not in the cards.

Not wanting to give up his cherished dream of Mars, he signs up for a more budget-friendly, experimental program and exchanges minds with a Martian. The idea seems perfect at first glance: total immersion in an alien environment without astronomical ticket costs. But here’s the twist: you can’t choose who to swap with. Unfortunately, Marvin ends up in the body of an intergalactic criminal, Ze Kraggash. The situation spirals out of control: it turns out he can’t stay in this body, and he can’t return to the human one either—Kraggash stole him and disappeared.

Our hero has only a few hours to find a way out, or both of his lives—his Martian one and his Earth one—will end forever.

This novel is a unique blend of philosophy and absurdity. Robert Sheckley masterfully combines parody elements with existential reflections, wordplay with scientific terms, and references to pop culture and historical events skillfully woven into the fabric of classic science fiction.

In the audiobook version, actor Grigory Perely managed to carefully preserve Sheckley’s signature style—the amazing combination of intellectual depth and razor-sharp satire.

“I’ve spent my whole life trying not to be too serious. I don’t consider myself a political thinker, and I try to convey everything to readers in a light, unobtrusive way. Irony is my style. I didn’t choose irony as the natural foundation of my thinking—it just turned out that way. It seems to me that people are more interested in mockery than in moralizing, in an entertaining story than in long-winded arguments. If what I say is misunderstood or only partly understood—if people simply read a funny story and, at the same time, rest—that suits me just fine,” — Robert Sheckley.
