The Wrong One

Pyotr Vasin, nicknamed the “Wrong One,” served as a sapper in the “Kontur” unit. During another operation—an explosion—he comes to his senses in 1941.

The first months of the war. Retreat, shattered units, panic. German tanks roll across Soviet soil. Vasin knows how to assemble a mine out of a pile of scrap, lay mines on the move, set up a tripwire—and hold back the enemy in places where an ordinary company has already fallen back. Only now these tactics attract the attention of the NKVD’s Special Department far too quickly.

To survive and save his comrades in arms, he’ll have to become the “Wrong One” again. Build explosives from whatever is at hand, teach untested fighters the art of mines, argue with political officers and commanders, and make decisions faster than the war grinds down yet another company.

And ahead—there is a bridge. The very one that absolutely cannot be left intact for the enemy.
