But the problems didn’t want to stay in the steppes. And, worse still, new ones were added to the old. Longtime enemies of my family surrounded me on all sides—among them, like a defenseless moth in the company of seasoned spider predators. These schemers have long buried Crow; to them, I’m just a minor misunderstanding they’ll dispose of quickly and easily. They won’t even have to soil their hands—for them, everything will be done by the enemies of the empire.
