Cats can’t fly—and everyone knows it. Especially cats as big, black, and fat as Sorbas. This cat lives quite happily with his beloved owner and spends the whole day admiring ships in the port of Hamburg. But one wonderful day, Sorbas has to play a role unexpected even for himself… a mother! And not for just anyone, but for a little orphaned seagull. Sorbas is helped in raising his feathered charge by a whole company of friendly port cats. They approach training young Fortunata very responsibly: they get her food, protect her from rats and other dangers of port life, and even try to teach her the art of flying. But the thing is, cats can’t fly. So to help the young gull find the sky, Sorbas will have to break one very, very strict prohibition…
