In a remote Siberian village, the Rodionovs—an uncle and a nephew—arrive, sent from the county center to organize a school. In reality, they are GPU envoys, and their main task is to determine the whereabouts of a numerous and extremely dangerous gang that terrorizes the local residents. Immediately after their arrival, the Rodionovs clash with the family of the local kulak Emelyan Lyubavin. By many signs, Lyubavin and his sons are connected to the gang. In turn, the Lyubavins are in no doubt that the visitors have been sent not only to deal with the school.
