The new opportunities that Lieutenant Irs gains after restoring contact with the Lunar base allow him to assess the balance of power in the world more precisely and understand that the USSR’s successes in the war against Germany may soon lead to very serious problems for the Soviet Union. However, for now this understanding is only his alone, and persuading Soviet leadership that measures must be taken as soon as possible turns out to be extremely difficult. The new threat is becoming more and more real, and Major General Pyotr Nagulin will have to face not only armed resistance from the Wehrmacht, but also entrenched patterns of thinking among the leaders of the USSR—patterns that can lead the country directly down the road to war against the entire world.
