In a city of the dead—long destroyed, far from human civilization—lives a single human child. His name is Will, and he is raised by three undead: a skeleton warrior of the heart named Blood; an elegant mummified priestess, Mary; and a willful ghost named Gus. The three pour love into the boy and teach him everything they themselves know. But one fine day, Will starts to wonder: “Who am I?”

Will must unravel the secrets of this dead land and dig up the undead’s past. He must learn love and mercy from good gods, and the fanaticism and madness of bad ones. And once he has learned all that, the boy will be able to take his first step on the path to becoming a paladin.
