In the second book, our hero’s life changes radically. Yesterday he was receiving the Order of the Red Banner from the general’s hands, embracing his beloved Nyura— and today he is a deserter accused of desertion, a criminal held in Prison No. 1 in Dolgov. And although he considered himself the most undemanding creature, to his own surprise he discovered that during his life with Nyura she had grown spoiled and softened: he had gotten used to a feather pillow, a feather mattress, and a cotton-wool quilt. In prison he had no room, everything was harsh and cold. And his further fate was unclear as well. Desertion and armed resistance—at the very least, that meant штрафбат (a punitive battalion) or something even worse: execution by firing squad…
How this tangled story ends, you’ll find out in the audiobook “Life and Unusual Adventures of Soldier Ivan Chonkin. Candidate for the Throne.”
