“Medicine Against Fear” (1976) is one of the most famous novels by the Weiner brothers, released during the golden period of the writers’ creative work and later adapted into films twice. The technique of alternating time frames—previously tested by the authors in “A Visit to the Minotaur”—makes it possible here not just to create an exciting detective story, but a work in which a modern plot intertwines with a historical one—namely, an account of the 16th-century doctor-alchemist Paracelsus.

The main narrative is told from the perspective of the brothers’ recurring hero, Inspector Tikhonov. This time, the crime was committed using a medication unknown to medicine. During the investigation, it becomes clear that two scientists are working on it, and the appearance of this new medicine should bring a real breakthrough in science…
