By a strange coincidence, Erast Petrovich Fandorin is traveling in the same direction with his wife and ends up near the scene of the tragedy almost at the same time as the gendarmes arrive. The head of the railway and gendarmerie administration asks Fandorin to take part in the investigation — and, judging by everything, he cannot refuse.
