The immense empire called the Union is in danger. The once divided and warring Northern clans have united. Now all lands north of Inglya are ruled by the bloodthirsty Betod, an unstoppable warrior swift to strike down and, at the same time, a wise ruler.
In the south, the powerful empire of the Gurks, governed by the firm hand of the bloodthirsty Uffman-ul-Doshd, has almost recovered from a recent war with the Union.
But the Union itself is worse off than ever. In the heart of the state, Adua, a conspiracy is ripening. The old king is infirm, and his heir, Crown Prince Ladislav, is more concerned with marriage and fencing than with the problems of the state. In essence, power is held by a greedy, closed council, which has also split into two opposing camps.
It would seem the Union is doomed. But then, suddenly, a lame cripple-inquisitor appears on the stage, a young idle nobleman, a mighty warrior from the North, and some even stranger heroes — and they will save the Union! At least they must. How they will do it, they themselves do not know. But Baiaz, the ancient mage, does know. Yet has the first among the magicians accounted for, for example, whether the potential rescuers will want to save the Union? And even his longtime enemy, the second apprentice of Yuvin, Khakhyul, who patronizes Uffman-ul-Doshd himself, is not sleeping either.
Despite all this, Baiaz’s cunning plan has already begun to come to fruition — though what will come of it is something even he himself does not know.
