The novel takes place in early 19th-century England. The author depicts contemporary society, steeped in cynicism, thirst for money and power. Alongside this, Dickens vividly portrays the lives of people who often suffer innocently due to the twists and turns of other people’s intrigues.
The novel’s complex plot, its social focus, and its exposure of the existing system soon after publication drew a great deal of criticism. However, later the book achieved worldwide popularity and fame, including after high praise from great writers—Dostoevsky, Bernard Shaw, and others.
Part of the novel is set in the Marshalsea debtors’ prison, which Dickens describes in great detail—along with its inmates, customs, and traditions. It turns out that as a young man, the author regularly visited this prison, calling on the debtor who had fallen on hard times—his father.
