Humanity begins colonizing Mars. Two space powers, America and Russia, join forces and send the first hundred permanent settlers to Mars—well-known scientists who must explore the planet, build the first structures, and put the equipment to use. When even this experiment succeeds, thousands of people arrive on Mars.

Should we try to terraform Mars, or should we leave it as it is—beautiful and unusual, preserving the history of billions of years? Should local living organisms continue to be sought, or can we release our own? Should Mars become a raw-material colony of Earth, or should it have its own economy, government, and state? There are as many answers to these questions as there are people—and each believes that their answer is the only correct one.
