"Cats and Mice" is the second part of Günter Grass’s "Danzig Trilogy," published after "The Tin Drum."

The book tells the story of a teenager named Joachim Malke, who grew up in the military city of Danzig saturated with Nazi atmosphere. He tries to change how people around him see him and become a hero, but he fails. Even receiving the Knight’s Cross doesn’t bring him recognition.

Grass frames this story as an exposure of the church, the school, the cult of the hero, and society as a whole. For Malke, all of this ends in tragic disappointment.
