The events of the novel take place in 1896, in the days before the coronation of Nicholas II. Unknown assailants kidnap Mikhail—four years old, the son of the Grand Duke Georgy Alexandrovich. The culprit, posing as a “Dr. Lind,” sets a condition: hand over the diamond “Graf Orlov,” which crowns the imperial scepter, and then the child will be returned. If his demand is refused, he promises to send the boy to his parents “in parts.” However, without the scepter, the coronation is impossible. Erast Petrovich Fandorin sets out to handle the matter, to protect the honor of the monarchy and prevent a catastrophe.

The story is presented as diary entries by Afanasiy Zyukin, the butler of the Grand Duke Georgy Alexandrovich. The novel conveys the dark, unsettling breath of Russia at the end of the nineteenth century and leads the reader to the account of the Khodynka tragedy.
