“Queen Margot” is a historical novel by Alexandre Dumas père, forming the first part of the trilogy about the Huguenot Wars, continued by the novels “The Countess of Monsoreau” and “Forty-Five.” The novel is set during the French civil wars (1562—1594)—bloody clashes between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots). On August 18, 1572, Catholic Margaret de Valois is married for political purposes to the leader of the Protestants, Henry of Navarre. Her wedding, celebrated in Paris with great splendor, ended on the St. Bartholomew’s Night. During the massacre, Margot accidentally saves a wounded Protestant nobleman and falls in love with him.
