1941. German troops begin their offensive against Moscow. Seventy-five divisions, one thousand aircraft… No war had ever delivered such a powerful blow. The Nazis are confident of the operation’s success. They want not only to capture Moscow, but in the literal sense to erase it from the face of the earth—opening all gates and flooding the city. To support the offensive, German intelligence plans to bring disorder and confusion into the rear of Moscow as well.
Panic, looting, rumors, disruption of the evacuation of factories, theft of cultural valuables. The calculation is not so much military as psychological. To carry out this task, a German liaison officer is sent to Moscow—“Father,” a reliably disguised agent with extensive connections among criminals—along with all the necessary instructions.
