Johanna Kmalevska’s much-troubled “Volkswagen” is once again packed to the brim with relatives and loved ones. Signaling at oncoming “turkeys” and other household creatures, the jalopy slowly makes its way along back roads of Poland toward extraordinary adventures and yet another family secret. Not far from a small village—where the heroine’s ancestors once lived, and where now keeps house distant relatives—a man’s corpse is found. The investigating authorities trace the address to Ms. Joanna’s: her parents, her cousin, and her cousin-in-law. However, none of them can identify the murdered man. Finally, intrigued beyond measure, the restive family sets off to the crime scene and tries to carry out an independent investigation, but some unknown person puts every obstacle in the way of these homegrown detectives and, without batting an eye, commits new and new atrocities…
