Hector Fitzbodly inherited his love of butterflies from his father—a fashionable wine merchant and passionate lepidopterist. But then his father, broken and ruined by the blackmail of the one-eyed adventurer Gulli ver Troupin, dies, and Hector goes roaming along the South Shore of Urbs-Umida, cherishing plans for revenge.
And then his knowledge of butterflies turns out to be exactly what he needs: Baron Bovrik de Vandelon (that’s what Troupin calls himself now) travels to Lady Mandible at the estate of Visipitts Hall, where she is preparing her famous annual ball—and he takes Hector along, because it’s butterflies that must make this ball not just famous, but legendary.
However, Hector isn’t the only one with a secret goal. Lord Mandible dreams of obtaining a shaggy boar on the hunt, and “Baron Bovrik” wants to collect seven glass eyes set with precious stones—one for each day of the week…
