Ancient Rus’, 962. Two Kyiv boyars decide to form a family-and-political alliance. Shortly after the betrothal, the groom’s porch reveals two dried frogs attached to a splinter and wrapped in a piece of parchment covered with Greek letters. In the city, there are only three people who can write Greek: a Greek priest, a Greek deacon, and the prince’s favorite nephew of Princess Olha, Torleiv.
