A thousand years later, a wandering warrior, Shigeru, finds Ryu when the boy loses his parents after an attack by bandits. Discovering a special gift in Ryu, Shigeru takes the boy as his apprentice.

At the same time, the quiet Moriko, the daughter of a lumberjack, is taken to train with the monastic Order of the Blades of Day—whom she despises. The monks know what power is hidden in Moriko.
