The plot is based on one of the most famous crimes in Japan, offering a unique artistic reconstruction of a sensational murder and its motives.

This riddle seems unsolvable, but a solution does exist…

Kiyoshi Mitarai, a famous detective, receives an unusual request from a mysterious woman named Kayo Ninomiya. However, Mitarai isn’t available—he’s traveling the world—and the woman is met by his friend, writer Kazumi Isioka.

The woman asks the writer to go with her to a remote area to find her hand’s buried brush there, even though both of her hands are already in place. Surprised, Isioka agrees.

Upon arriving at the mysterious mountain village and the unusual inn "Ryugatей," they are forced to postpone their case, only to confront an incredible murder. In a locked room with panoramic windows—through which everything can be seen—the woman who was playing the Japanese koto instrument dies from a gunshot to the head. At the same moment, the room is engulfed in flames…

This mystery would have been perfect for Mitarai, but he isn’t in the country, and he can be contacted only through letters…

“Of all the cases I’ve ever described, this one stands out for its madness. While investigating it, I thought I would never be able to put it on paper. Recalling it, I lose my breath. I write about it only because I think it’s important to tell this story to the world. But I wouldn’t want to experience something like that again…” — Kazumi Isioka.
