The novel is set at the beginning of the century. A chain of suspects passes before the reader—many of whom had been enemies of the murdered man. The events in the novel develop so that one crime, like a chain reaction, draws another behind it. But an impatient reader will be surprised by an unusual ending. The main character is a talented and unassuming detective, Patmosov Aleksei Romanovich, who skillfully investigates incredibly tangled cases. The prototype for this character was most likely a luminary of Petersburg’s investigation services—the famous Putilin.
