Everyone is for themselves, everyone is consumed by their own—someone by reckless love, someone by hatred that won’t let you breathe. And each is endlessly lonely inside the shell of their own “self.”

Veronika, a doctor who by circumstances became a housekeeper in a large, well-off, complicated family, feels her loneliness especially sharply. Here everyone has their own problems, their own ambitions, their own accounts with one another. But is it only like this in this family—doesn’t the same thing happen anywhere else in the huge megacity where people’s destinies are easily ground up?

Veronika must survive, survive in this cold and cruel world. But it turns out that to survive, you must inevitably help others—secretly—strangers and alien people, in essence, too. And goodness is a punishable thing. That’s how Veronika ends up in a dark storage room, two steps from death, with almost unreal hope that in the darkness of her despair a saving flame will suddenly flare up…
