In the 19th century, Lieutenant Zherebtsov’s expedition conducted the first research of the Kara-Bogaz Bay. The name Kara-Bogaz translates from Turkmen as “black throat.” Caspian Sea water flows into the bay at a high speed, and the shores of this salty body of water are barren, with no sources of fresh water there.
