And so, for the first time since that long-ago night when I swore an oath to the Slayer, I returned to my hometown—so I wouldn’t meet here either the reception I’d hoped for, or the thing I feared most. Reality turned out to be stranger and more terrible.
Our inability to reach Middenheim in time to take part in its defense plunged the Slayer into the longest gloom we’d experienced since we met. For a while, I was afraid he might never recover from it. But then a chance meeting with an old friend pulled us into one of the craziest and most desperate adventures we’ve ever taken part in. The Slayer’s spirit revived—although back then I often thought we would pay for his recovery with our lives.
