“History of Rome” by Theodor Mommsen has long been a treasure of scholarship. This encyclopedic work, translated into all the main European languages, was first published in Russia back in 1858—in three substantial volumes. Half a century later, a shortened version prepared by historian N. D. Chechulin was released.
In this form, the book—without losing any of its merits—became available to everyone interested in the history of European civilization.
