Yelizaveta Nikolayevna Vodovozova (before marriage—Tsevlovskaya) was born in 1844 into a family of a landowner. In the mid-1850s, she was sent to study in St. Petersburg, at the Smolny Institute, which she graduated from in early 1862. In 1863, Vodovozova published her first article and, from then until her death (in 1923), never stopped literary work. She published a number of works on pedagogical issues and also wrote children’s books, but for the modern reader, the main interest lies in her memoirs. “The Story of One Childhood” is a revision for children of Vodovozova’s memoirs “At the Dawn of Life,” selecting (and, if necessary, shortening) only those parts that describe the author’s childhood and her institute years.
