This ghost town is the place that haunted me— the place that made me. It became crystal clear that I’ll never outgrow Triple Falls, and I’ll never forget what I experienced here. I can still feel them—all my people from that summer. Even knowing the danger, I willingly surrendered. I ignored every warning. I let my sickness, my love, take control of me and ruin me. I played my part, fully aware and tempting fate, until it finally did its job. I didn’t even think about running away. We behaved irresponsibly and frivolously, believing that our youth made us unbreakable, freeing us from the burden of our sins. And we paid for it. I’m sick of pretending that I didn’t leave my soul behind in these hills and valleys, in the thicket of woods that keeps my secrets. So I came back—to make peace with my fate. If I can’t properly mourn my past and heal, I’ll keep on getting sick. That will be my curse. But it’s time to admit—more even to myself than to anyone else—that I refused my future because of what I became, and because of the men who helped make that happen. Right now, I just want to come to terms with my true self and forget the ending that awaits me. Because I can’t keep living a lie.
