Who prevents us from living forever? A certain someone—the conspiratorial immortal community called the Workshop—cannot stand the ancient enemy known as the Chameleon. He is the only being on Earth capable of killing the Immortal. And he is also smart, resourceful, strong—and can become invisible!
For thousands of years, the Chameleons have been trying to wipe out the immortals, using for their search a special sense—“the instinct of anger.”
To fend off the new attack of the enemy, the Immortals are forced to seek help from ordinary people. But what will this lead to—who knows? Maybe a private investigator, Viktor Tumanov? It’s exactly the kind of questions that his work profile fits. But why did the immortals choose Viktor specifically as their helper? What is he better than a hundred other detectives? Perhaps only a face-to-face meeting between Tumanov and the Chameleon will shed light on all the mysteries. And that meeting will certainly happen. Let Tumanov not be the best investigator in the world, but he is used to bringing any case through to the end.
It is precisely his persistence and meticulousness that causes the immortals to lose control over the further development of events—and turn from the clients who ordered the investigation into the suspects under investigation. But that isn’t all the surprises destiny has prepared for the Workshop. Closer to the end of the first part of the duology, Tumanov builds a complete picture of what’s going on and makes certain conclusions. And these conclusions do not match the official version of the Workshop in any way.
