"The Inquisition" and “The Number of Rebekah” are continuations of the tetralogy “Shadows of the Past.” In the first part, the story is about the young von Tille, a guard at Dachau, who arrives in Auschwitz for an inspection. He talks with colleagues, trying to understand how beautiful dreams of revenge for a great nation turned into a cult of the Moloch. “The Number of Rebekah” tells the same story from the viewpoint of Viland’s beloved—a German Jewish woman, a camp prisoner. The author, Oksana Kirillova, spent many years studying archives to create characters who interact with real historical figures. All books in the tetralogy cover the period from the 1930s to the 1990s and take place in Germany and Russia. But it’s not just a dry account of history—it’s a gripping story of tragic love, shattered ideals, and unexpected twists.
