The state established by our contemporaries in the depths of 17th-century Siberia grows ever more rooted in the surrounding world. Both its leaders and ordinary citizens are finding it harder and harder. With each passing year, more challenges fall to the lot of the Angarians. Human life is only a moment in the existence of a civilization, but in that short time Sokolov and his comrades must leave their descendants the groundwork that will help them survive in the future.

In Europe, the Thirty Years’ War is still raging, but its course is no longer the same. In Moskovite Rus, trouble and a bloody struggle for power are brewing again—claimants to the throne are preparing for a showdown. Without really meaning to, the Angarians find themselves once more in history—sheltering people fleeing from the losing side of the conflict.
