No matter where fate throws you, no matter how hard things get, you may not turn away from your goal and betray yourself. Only by drinking your cup to the dregs and knowing everything that fell to your lot can you tell yourself: “I understood something in this life...”. With a song about this, the play “The Prince and the Pauper” by Lenin Prize laureate Sergey Mikhalkov ends in the MHAT. An old performance for adults and children with music and dances based on Mark Twain, a stage edition, an intermezzo, and song texts by Lesya Tanyuk, who produced this performance. The play is full of vivid spectacle, staged by actors from an old traveling London troupe of the Elizabethan era. It was designed by artist Boris Messerer, with music by composer Mikhail Bolotin. The songs have a playful quickness of rhythm, an inventive arrangement: the composer perfectly knows both the melody of the era in which the conditional “Prince and the Pauper” takes place and today’s musical texture. Thus, in the performance, the sounds of old English folk instruments are used—horns, small bells, bagpipes, specific percussion, and more.
