Scott Fischer, a well-known mountain guide and founder of the company “Mountain Madness,” became the first American to reach the summit of Lhotse. He is also known as an organizer of commercial expeditions, including to Everest.
In 1996 Fischer’s team ran into a snowstorm on the descent from the summit. All the climbers except Scott managed to reach Camp IV on the South Col. Due to various problems, including health issues, he didn’t have the strength to make the descent.
This tragedy served as the basis for many books and films, but Scott Fischer’s true identity remains a mystery. In this biography, author Robert Birkby presents the real Scott Fischer, describing his expeditions to Alaska and Tanzania, his climbs of Elbrus and Ama Dablam, and explains why Fischer named his daughter after one of the peaks.
