In Dr. Lowell’s world, there is no room for mysticism, and every riddle, in his opinion, has a logical explanation. However, in 1920s New York there are dangers more real than witches and wizards—for example, a criminal boss who politely asks for help treating his man, whose face is twisted with terror. But soon it becomes clear that finding reasonable explanations for what’s happening is getting harder and harder. Science is powerless against mysterious forces that bring death at night, and even the police can’t help. Perhaps only armed men in “Borsalino” hats with an Italian accent will be able to deal with the witch.
