The beginning of July 1941 was black with grief: German tank divisions drive toward Moscow and Leningrad. Six Soviet armies of the first strategic echelon are encircled and completely smashed in border fighting. The front, torn to shreds, rushes eastward, while from the depths of the Soviet Union, in columns, troops of the internal districts are hurried forward to stand before the enemy as an “impregnable” wall and perish in the following battles—because these forces are not even enough for active defense, and Marshal Timoshenko dreams of counteroffensives.
