To study the nearest star systems, identified with Earth-based detectors, one thousand spacecraft with crews were sent under the OZI-PRO (Near-Earth Star Research Program). The members of the research teams were not ordinary people made of flesh and blood, but their copies—so-called engrams. To ensure the right number of astronauts, sixty scientists from the main group were copied many times.
Twelve years after the launch, contact with Earth was cut off. For unknown reasons, the solar system fell silent. Being completely cut off from the OZI-PRO, however, all missions continued to carry out their tasks—knowing full well that their home planet might never answer them.
