In the spring of 1799, Russian troops entered Italy in order to defeat the French. Field Marshal Suvorov took command of the allied army and, within just a few weeks, routed the enemy at the Adda River, restoring Milan and Turin. It seemed that the road to Paris had already been opened.
But the Vienna court council, alarmed by the swift victories of the Russians, halted the advance and instead demanded that their forces be spent on sieges of fortresses.
Meanwhile, fresh units under General MacDonald marched from Naples to aid the surviving French forces. Suvorov, constrained by his allies’ intrigues, clearly saw: delay is fatal—the enemy is about to close the encirclement. And it is precisely in this decisive hour, when the outcome of the entire campaign is at stake, that those who are usually overlooked in dispatches step forward—soldiers and officers of the Leib Guard Jaeger Regiment.
They have no time for honors. The main thing is to survive where death comes twice: from a French bullet and from Austrian betrayal.
