Description
A small antique shop in London becomes a place where two eras and cultures collide—traditional China and a modernizing England. A father, faithful to old ways, and his son, eager to fit into the new reality, experience loneliness, misunderstanding, and outside prejudice in very different ways.

A Chinese immigrant family leaves Beijing hoping to start over in London. On a quiet street near St. Paul’s Cathedral, they inherit an antique store. Mr. Ma embodies “old China”: he is strict, unyielding, and ill at ease with the changes happening around him. His son, Ma Wei, by contrast, tries to settle in in an unfamiliar country and learn to accept new rules. Yet, for all their differences, both must face what many immigrants know all too well: language barriers, racial prejudice, homesickness, and a sense of isolation—and all of it becomes even more acute against the backdrop of a deep cultural divide between the East and the West at the start of the 20th century.
